If you always want to climb, you feel the pressure of a good year. You know how much blood, sweat and tears you put in to make the previous year what it was so you know improving upon that can be daunting. That being said, it is also invigorating. The “fresh start” of a new year is full of optimism and goals. Herein lies the beauty of the game that is business. With new goals come new challenges to overcome and overcoming challenges is the essence of business. It puts pressure on you but it is a good kind of pressure. That pressure is can drive you to create and design new products, new systems and continue, even renew, that passion going into the new year.

In order to achieve the goals you have set for your business to grow in the next year, you must become comfortable with delegation. As your business grows so do the individuals in your business. They have to begin taking on more responsibility because there is more that you have to deal with. There simply isn’t the time for you to micro-manage every move that is made. That being said, it is difficult to relinquish control of your business. A good way to look at it is the people beneath you in your company have been putting in the time and effort so they can be ready when the time comes. It can be scary at first but is ultimately satisfying to see the people you helped teach begin to execute on more high level tasks and projects. In order for the delegation to fully take, you also have to up your game as well. This includes segmenting and improving structure in your business. Segmenting your week can be incredibly helpful not only for productivity but also for peace of mind. When you know you only have to focus on 2 or 3 things rather than everything on a given day it clears your mind and frees you up to think more creatively and not be distracted by all the noise in your head.

When you take time to unplug and step away from the craziness of business and day to day responsibilities your mind has a chance to reset and even look at the world as a consumer rather than a business owner. Looking at the world through this lens enables you to view your business in a different light and come up with more creative and elegant solutions.

The ultimate measuring stick for leadership is looking at the performance of those you are leading. Look at how the people you lead are coming out of their shell and examine the consistency of their attitudes toward work. If they are performing then you know you are doing something right. On the other hand, if it seems they are falling behind or off pace it is important to look at what you can do as a leader to fix this before going after them. Always look inward first.

Goal setting is not the same as setting a resolution. Especially because of the negative connotation associated with people breaking their resolutions. Instead of resolutions, set 6-8 goals, divide them between the gym, business and family/personal. Setting goals has a compound effect. You build on what you accomplished or failed to accomplish in the past year. Every little habit and discipline you display puts you in position to either kill your goals for the new year or miss them. If your habits lead you to missing your goal then it is time to re-evaluate your daily habits. These yearly goals that aren’t achieved in the previous year, should carry over into the next year. Then when you post your goals somewhere you can see the everyday when you wake up and before you go to bed it puts that focus on it. It rids you of the disease, “out of sight, out of mind” when it comes to your goals. When people don’t see their goals everyday it can be detrimental to their level of achievement for the year. Sure there are some that stick in your mind but it is easy to lose track of one or two amongst the stresses of everyday life. Posting the goals, seeing them when you wake up and before you go to bed ensures you never lose track.

If you can have all three, fitness, business and family dialed in you can operate on a high level and achieve a greater percentage of self-actualization. Each of these three things prime the other for success. As you get a handle on your fitness you are able to get a handle on your family and by having that family life dialed in you are happier and able to function and think more clearly in your business. Some feel they are just going to be the guy who works all the time and that will be fine. While that can make you a lot of money, it doesn’t make you happy and money without happiness is just paper. Many successful people in business struggle with their personal life and this puts a sort of ceiling on what they can achieve in business. The personal struggles will always drift into your work. This is why it is so vital to dial in on your personal life and health/fitness in order to have greater success in business.

Never look at someone like Cory, John or any successful individual like they have it all figured out. It is easy to do and can lead to serious detriments in your own development. No one has it all the way figured out. Everyone is working off the best information they have at the time and figuring it out as they go along. This is why entrepreneurs are constantly making adjustments, because it was never all the way figured out. This is why massively successful companies like Apple, Uber, Tesla, Facebook etc. are constantly updating software. We don’t have shit figured out. So don’t be discouraged if you feel like you don’t know what you are doing. As long as you are trying to get better everyday you are trending in the right direction.

Closing Thought For The New Year:

“Network, get up early, read more books, avoid time wasters, invest in your health, take calculated risks, write down your goals, work smarter, do something you believe in and foster meaningful relationships”
